Get unstuck at work

Are you feeling stuck at work? Bogged down, dissatisfied or in a rut? It can happen to anyone at any level. For some, it’s the classic ‘I’m too busy to think about it’. For others, you’re probably wearing down friends’ ears with the same old, unhappy stories about the daily grind.

So, what can you do if you’re stuck?

We suggest the ACT Approach, a three-step framework designed to help you regain control, find clarity, and take actionable steps toward career fulfilment.

The ACT Approach

The ACT Approach stands for Alternatives, Connections, and Thinking—a roadmap for identifying issues, tapping into supportive networks, and reframing your mindset.

  1. Alternatives
Many people stay in unsatisfactory work situations because they can’t think of viable alternatives. Common pitfalls include decision paralysis or inflexible ‘stay or leave’ thinking. The ACT Approach encourages you to reflect on your role, explore patterns, and list at least ten variable solutions, big or small. Suggestions range from talking to a boss or adjusting your role to considering opportunities outside the organisation. Even small steps can stop a downward spiral.

  2. Connections
Building and maintaining meaningful connections is crucial for breaking free of a career rut. The ACT Approach emphasises three key types:

    • Inputs: Surround yourself with supportive people and environments to gain clarity and motivation.

    • Feelings: Acknowledge and understand your emotions instead of denying or suppressing them. Feelings are valuable data for decision-making.

    • Meaning: Reflect on whether your work aligns with your core values and long-term goals. Time passes quickly, and it’s important to make intentional choices about how you spend it.

  3. Thinking
Negative thought patterns often compound feelings of being stuck. Common themes include self-doubt, fear of change, and misplaced loyalty. The ACT Approach helps regain personal power by addressing limiting beliefs and, if necessary, seeking professional help for mental health challenges like anxiety or exhaustion.

Risks of inaction

The dangers of staying in a rut include emotional burnout, reduced confidence, and the potential for long-term dissatisfaction. Whether indecision, fear, or external pressures, failing to act can lead to a cycle of regret and missed opportunities.

Take action with the ACT Approach

Ultimately, the ACT Approach encourages proactive reflection and decision-making that you tailor to your circumstance. Whether the right solution is a subtle shift in your current role or a career move, this method equips you with the tools to take meaningful next steps.
