This lawyer found a way to navigate
the realities of legal practice
Before the Programme | “We have a lot of hard skills training, but no training about how to navigate politics at a law firm, how to navigate your emotions, or how to navigate your wellbeing. Other training tells you how to draft a great agreement: I don’t care at this point. I was looking for something more. I was looking for an answer to how to make all this sustainable in my life. Is it possible to have a sustainable career, or is it just a gig for five to ten years and then you have to switch?”
Why This Programme Felt Different | “It was super convincing that the guys who put this together have been in the engine room of these machines for a long time. They understand the game. They have worked in law firms, one of them was a lawyer at Freshfields for 20 years, not two months. They know what they're doing, they know the background, they know the kitchen, they are HR leaders and know the ugly stuff as well.”
What Shifted | “It is eye-opening and addresses issues from a perspective you would never expect , and through lenses you would never think possible. When I joined the programme I thought, ‘I'm a lawyer. I'm the best and the smartest. What can you possibly tell me?’ And then they told me! Sometimes it was brutally eye-opening.”
What I Learned | “The true value of this programme is understanding the game you're playing, and it's not the game you thought you were playing. If you don't learn how to do that, you will ruin the hard work you put in ― because hard work is not enough. Without this bit, which is at least 50% of it, you'll be a good lawyer technically, but that's it.”
The Impact | “It brings you real benefits, if you apply just 10% of it. It's a good strategy to just pick one thing and try to apply it consistently. That's why I think it's really creating results. It’s fantastic. It would have been amazing if someone had offered me a structured programme like this a few years ago. It was great. I love you guys, and you should do this to more people because this is really beneficial. I really hope you will be successful, because although I know we will never get rid of the toxic culture in some places, maybe thanks to people like you it will get a bit better. You have to educate people earlier.”
